BROCKTON, Mass. - After a dramatic come from behind win yesterday afternoon, the Eagles and Demon Deacons took to the field again, and provided quite an encore as it took 17 innings for the Eagles to edge the Demon Deacons tonight in Brockton. Four hours and 41 minutes after the first pitch, Eric Campbell laced a double to center field, scoring Tony Sanchez from first and giving BC a thrilling 4-3 victory. With the win, the Eagles improve to 15-21-1 overall and 8-12 in ACC action. Wake falls to 22-21 overall and 8-12 in conference play.
The Demon Deacons would not get their first hit until the top of the fourth as Andy Goff would double down the left field line off of starter Terry Doyle and beat a strong throw from Jared McGuire. The very next batter, Evan Ocheltree would walk and both he and Goff would advance one base on a wild pitch by Doyle.
Doyle would throw another wild pitch and Goff would come in from third giving the Deacs a 1-0 advantage. Austin Jones would reach the very next batter on an Eagles error, scoring Ocheltree and giving Wake a 2-0 lead.
Michael Belfiore would leadoff the bottom of the fourth for BC with a walk and advance to third as Tony Sanchez would lace a double to left field, putting the first two runners on for BC. With one out, Jared McGuire would groundout to second base but Belfiore would score from third cutting the lead to 2-1. Joe Ayers would follow with an RBI single up the middle and Tony Sanchez would tie the game at 2-2.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Ben Terry would double to right field and Brett Linnenkohl would try to score from first but be beat by the relay throw from Joe Ayers. Doyle would strike out Allan Dykstra the very next batter, endings Wake's threat.
Terry Doyle pitched an impressive nine innings for BC, allowing only one earned run on six hits, while striking out 12. Garret Bullock was equally as impressive as he pitched 10 innings allowing only two runs on eight hits and striking out seven as the score remained tied through 10.
In the top of the 11th, with the score still knotted at 2-2, Brandon Ziemann would leadoff with a single and advance the next pitch on a balk by Eric Niesen. Ryan Hutchinson would advance Ziemann to third the next batter with a sacrifice bunt to the third base side.
After an intentional walk to Michael Belfiore, Tony Sanchez would also be intentionally walked to load the bases. But, Niesen would get Eric Campbell to strike out and Jared McGuire to fly out to end a major threat for BC.
Evan Ocheltree would lead off the top of the 14th with a single up the middle and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cory Hindel. Ocheltree would proceed to steal third base. After a big strikeout to Dustin Hood, BC reliever Nate Jeanes would hit Linnenkohl and walk Ben Terry to load the bases.
With two outs in the inning, Allan Dykstra would hit a ground ball in the hole and BC could not make a play on it as Ocheltree would score from third, pulling the Deacs ahead 3-2.
In the bottom of the inning, BC would come right back as Jared McGuire would leadoff with a triple to put a man in scoring position for the Eagles with no outs. Joe Ayers would follow with an RBI single through the right side, scoring McGuire and tying the game at 3-3.
The score would remain tied at 3-3 as both Jeanes and Niesen pitched brilliantly in relief. In the top of the 17th, Ben Terry and Allan Dykstra would hit back to back singles, putting runners on first and second for the Deacs. Jeanes would intentionally walk pinch hitter Eric Williams to load the bases.
After striking out Andy Goff, Jeanes would get Tyler Smith to fly out to shallow right and Terry was forced to hold at third. Jeanes would then get Ocheltree to strike out swinging, stranding all three runners on base
Finally, in the bottom half of the 17th, Tony Sanchez would notch his second hit of the day - a single to left field, and Eric Campbell would follow with a long drive to center, doubling off the wall, and give the Eagles their second dramatic win in as many days.
The Eagles and Demon Deacons will conclude their series tomorrow afternoon at Shea Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
