Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team scored runs when it counted and played solid defense to beat Brown University 6-2 at Shea Field this afternoon. After being rained out Sunday and Tuesday, the Eagles were finally treated to some dry weather, an opportunity they refused to squander.
Eagles freshman starter Taylor Peyton struggled in the first inning, allowing two runs on three hits. The Bears leadoff hitter, Andrea Browne, doubled off the center field wall, and moved up to third on a wild pitch by Peyton. Browne came around to score on an RBI single by Kelsey Wilson. Wilson eventually scored on a single by Amanda Asay, giving Brown the early 2-0 lead.
The Eagles wasted no time striking back in the bottom of the first with a rally that started on Ashley Obrest's one-out double to left. Obrest moved up to third on a wild pitch by Brown starting pitcher Jessica Iwasaki, before scoring on a double by senior Britney Thompson.
Peyton settled down for a perfect second, before the Eagles offense went back to work in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Dani Weir led off with a single to center field, before being replaced by pinch-runner Carley McNary. McNary, playing center field in the flex-defensive position, stole second base to move into scoring position. With senior Amanda Brooks at the plate, McNary took off for third. A miscommunication by the Brown infielders left third base wide-open, and the catcher's throw sailed into left field as McNary came around to tie the game.
Both Peyton and Iwasaki cruised through hitless innings in the third and fourth, before Peyton gave way to Thompson in the circle to start the fifth. Thompson walked the first batter, before Obrest, senior Jenna Macchi, and sophomore Renee Ramos combined for a rare 2-6-4 double-play on an attempted sacrifice bunt.
Out of the inning unscathed, the Eagles rallied the bats in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Amanda Booth lifted a relatively routine fly ball to right field that bounced off the Brown fielder's glove for a two-base error. Freshman Kat Vasquez singled to left field, moving Booth up to third. After Obrest drew a walk, Macchi came up with the bases loaded. Macchi crushed a single up the middle to plate two runs and give the Eagles a 4-2 advantage. After Thompson walked to reload the bases, Ramos ripped a two-run single through the right side to extend the BC lead to 6-2.
Thompson shut the Bears down in the sixth and seventh to preserve the Boston College victory.
Thompson improves to 5-9 on the season, while the team improves to 9-18. Thompson and Macchi are now tied for the team lead with 23 RBIs apiece.
The Eagles will host Georgia Tech this weekend for a three-game series at Shea Field. The Saturday doubleheader will begin at 1pm, as will Sunday's finale.
