Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College dropped the first game of today's softball doubleheader with Florida State 9-0. The Eagles sent freshman Taylor Peyton to the circle, while the Seminoles countered with their ace, Tiffany McDonald, who came into the game with a stingy 1.25 ERA.
Peyton started very strong for the Eagles, not allowing a baserunner until the third inning. Meanwhile, McDonald took some time to settle in, walking two batters in the first and two more in the third.
It was in the third that the Seminoles struck first. With two outs and a runner on first, Veronica Wootsen planted a Peyton offering over the left field fence to give Florida State a 2-0 lead.
Florida State added single runs in the fourth and fifth, while McDonald settled in and shut down the Eagles offense. The Eagles put runners on in the fourth, fifth, and sixth, but were unable to advance them past first each time.
The floodgates opened in the top of the seventh, when Florida State struck for five runs to take a 9-0 lead. The Eagles did themselves no favors in this stanza, committing two errors and a wild pitch that aided the `Noles attack.
McDonald shut down the Eagles in the seventh to close out the complete-game shutout. She improved to 12-11 on the season, while Peyton dropped to 2-7.
The Eagles and Seminoles will play the second game of the doubleheader later this afternoon at Shea Field.
