Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College got back on a winning track this afternoon, taking the first game of a doubleheader against Rhode Island, 9-0 in five innings. Senior Jenna Macchi led the way with her second three-homer game of the season, while freshman Taylor Peyton sparkled in the circle, hurling a complete game shutout.
BC exploded out of the gates with a four-run first inning. Sophomore Renee Ramos and freshman Katrina Vasquez drew walks to start the game, bringing up Macchi with no outs in the first. Macchi responded by lifting a Jill Anderson offering up and out over the wall in right-center field. Senior Britney Thompson followed Macchi with a longball of her own, crushing a pitch to straightaway center.
Endowed with a 4-0 lead, Peyton cruised through perfect frames in the second and third. Unfortunately for Rhode Island, the bottom of the third saw Macchi leading off. She took Anderson deep again, parking a ball in nearly the same spot in right-center.
Ahead 5-0, Boston College continued the onslaught in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out and two runners on base, Ramos singled through the left side to score freshman Blair Destito. Next up was Macchi. Facing a new Rhode Island pitcher, Marybeth Ball, Macchi came through with the same result, hammering a three-run homer to left-center field. This put Boston College ahead 9-0.
In the top of the fifth, Peyton set down all three batters in a row, punctuating the outing with a swinging strikeout of Christine Gentile. As a rule, if one team has a lead of eight runs or more after five innings, the game is over.
Macchi finished the game 3-3 with three homeruns and seven RBIs. She also hit three homeruns March 31st against Virginia. Ramos was 2-2 with a walk, RBI and two runs scored. Thompson finished 2-3 with the homerun, and senior Ashley Obrest contributed two hits.
Peyton earned the win to improve to 2-6. Boston College will play again against Rhode Island in the nightcap of today's doubleheader.
