Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The second game of today's softball doubleheader against the University of Rhode Island was a much more closely contested matchup than game one, which Boston College won 9-0. Tied 1-1 in the nightcap, the Eagles broke loose for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the 5-1 win.
Rhode Island sent Katie Halcomb to the circle for game two, while BC Head Coach Jen Finley countered with sophomore Savana Lloyd. Both pitchers cruised through two scoreless innings before each surrendering a run in the third.
Rhode Island scored first when Alyssa Martino brought home Christine Gentile with an RBI single. The Eagles quickly answered in the bottom of the third. A double by senior Jenna Macchi moved junior Carley McNary over to third with one out. Senior Britney Thompson followed with a walk, which brought up senior Ashley Obrest with the bases loaded. Obrest lifted a long foul ball down the right field line, bringing home McNary with a sacrifice fly.
Lloyd pitched a perfect fourth before giving way to sophomore Amanda Klimzcak in the fifth. Klimzcak got through the fifth and sixth unscathed, and the score remained 1-1 when the Eagles came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth.
To this point, the Eagles had been unable to get much going against the hard-throwing Halcomb. That changed with one swing of the bat when Obrest led off the sixth with a long homerun that put the Eagles ahead 2-1. After freshman Taylor Peyton popped up, freshman Amy Tunstall came through with a bomb of her own, taking a Halcomb offering over the wall in left-center. Later in the inning, sophomore Renee Ramos capped off the fireworks with a two-run homer to left.
With one on and one out in the top of the seventh, URI's Gentile drilled a Klimzcak offering back off the pitcher, knocking her out of the game. Finley called on Thompson, playing right field at the time, to come in to close out the game. Thompson quickly got a flyout and a forceout to earn her first save of the season.
Tunstall finished the day 3-3, while McNary chipped in two hits. Klimzcak earned a well-deserved victory, and the Eagles improved to 8-15 on the year. They play again tomorrow afternoon at 4pm when they host the University of Massachusetts at Shea Field.
