Chestnut Hill, Mass. - After losing 11-1 to #17 Oregon State yesterday, the Eagles Softball team looked to bounce back in the nightcap against Liberty University. Luck was not on Boston College's side, however, as Liberty snuck past the Eagles 6-5 in extra innings.
Starting pitcher Britney Thompson got the scoring started early for BC, singling home leadoff hitter Carly McNary ('08) in the first. Liberty struck back with a run of its own in the bottom of the first, before Thompson bore down for three scoreless innings.
Liberty exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 5-1 lead. Boston College came right back in the sixth, scoring two runs. Then, down 5-3 in their last at-bat, the Eagles rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh.
Senior shortstop Jenna Machi led off the seventh with a clutch single, bringing up Thompson as the tying run. Thompson, who has hit well all season, launched a two-run, game-tying homerun, making the score 5-5.
Freshman Taylor Peyton shut down Liberty in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings.
By rule, teams get to begin extra innings with a runner already on second base. BC was unable to bring their runner home in the top of the eighth, but Liberty was able to capitalize on their's in the bottom half of the inning.
With the 6-5 loss, BC drops to 1-4 on the season, and 0-3 on their current Hawaiian tour. The Eagles play twice more later today, first against Pacific, and then once again against the host University of Hawaii.
