Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College Softball team kicked off their Hawaiian tour yesterday afternoon, dropping a 5-1 decision to the host University of Hawaii. Boston College was unable to overcome a sloppy first inning, despite playing very well the rest of the game.
With two outs and a runner on first in the bottom of the opening stanza, Senior pitcher Britney Thompson hit a Hawaii batter, extending the inning. After consecutive wild pitches, Thompson surrendered a three-run blast to Hawaii's Kate Robinson. The next batter, Brandi Peiler also homered, giving the Rainbow Wahine a 4-0 lead.
Freshman Taylor Peyton relieved Thompson and went the rest of the way, scattering eight hits over 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one run. Unfortunately for BC, one run was all the Eagles offense could muster, and the first inning damage proved too costly.
The Eagles lone run came in the top of the fifth, when Junior Carly McNary scored on a wild pitch. Hawaii answered with a run in the bottom of the inning.
At the plate, the Eagles were led by Thompson and Senior catcher Ashley Oberst, with two hits apiece. In addition to her solid performance on the mound, Peyton also ripped a double.
The Eagles fall to 1-2 with yesterday's loss. They continue their Spring Break tour of Hawaii with games against Oregon State and Liberty later today.
