Worcester, Mass. - The Softball team continued its winning ways in the nightcap of today's doubleheader, beating Holy Cross 9-0 to earn the series sweep. The story of the game was once again solid pitching and the powerful bat of Senior Britney Thompson. However, it was not Thompson on the hill this time, as Freshman Taylor Peyton stepped up to give the Eagles five scoreless innings of two-hit ball, as Boston College completed today's sweep of the Crusaders.
Thompson, coming off a two-hit, two-RBI game earlier in the day, got BC going in the second with a leadoff homer. Holy Cross looked to answer in the bottom half of the inning, advancing a runner to second with one out. Peyton responded with back-to-back strikeouts to slam the door.
Thompson got it started again in the fourth with a leadoff double. She came around to score on an RBI single by Sophomore Renee Ramos. Ramos was later plated on an RBI single by Freshman Katrina Vasquez, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
With one out in the fifth, Shortstop Jenna Macchi singled and stole second. With two outs, Senior Ashley Obrest singled Macchi home for the 4-0 lead.
Macchi provided more firepower in the sixth, as she got the big inning started with an RBI double that brought home Junior Amanda Booth. The very next batter was Thompson, who knocked in Macchi and Amy Tunstall ('10) with her second double of the game. After a Holy Cross pitching change, Ashley Obrest ('07) reached on a fielding error, bringing Thompson home. Peyton knocked in BC's ninth and final run with a single two batters later.
Sophomore Savana Lloyd pitched a scoreless sixth to nail down the win for Peyton and the Eagles.
Macchi, Ramos, Vasquez, and Booth all chipped in two hits to the Eagles 13-hit attack, while Thompson collected three hits. Between the two games of the doubleheader, Thompson was a sizzling 5-7, with five extra-base hits, five runs scored, and five RBIs. She is now batting .468 on the season, with 16 RBIs in 14 games.
Boston College improves to 3-11 on the year, and will be in action next over the weekend, as they travel to Virginia for a three-game set.
