Worcester, Mass. - The Boston College Softball team turned in a dominant performance in the first game of a doubleheader with Holy Cross this afternoon, winning 8-0 in six innings. Senior Britney Thompson was the star of the game, pitching four scoreless innings of one-hit ball to earn the win. She was also 2-3 at the plate, with a double, triple, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
The Eagles swooped down on the Crusaders immediately, putting up a five-spot in the top of the first inning. After back-to-back one-out singles by Freshman Dani Weir and Senior Ashley Obrest, Thompson came to the plate and crushed a two-run double. One out later, Sophomore Renee Ramos singled Thompson home. After a Blair Destito ('10) walk, Freshman Taylor Peyton plated two with a double of her own, staking the Eagles to a 5-0 lead.
Thompson was at it again in the third, leading off with a triple. She came home on the next play, as Freshman Amy Tunstall reached on an error by the Holy Cross shortstop.
The next inning, Senior leadoff hitter Jenna Macchi manufactured a run with some savvy baserunning. After reaching on an error, Macchi moved to third on a groundout. She then stole home, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Thompson was cruising, retiring the last seven batters she faced, and departed after four sparkling innings.
The Eagles added their eighth and final run in the sixth on a RBI single by Weir. Thompson was replaced on the hill by Sophomore Amanda Klimczak, who picked up where the senior hurler left off. Klimczak was nearly flawless, striking out three over two innings work. The only baserunner she allowed was the result of a fielding error. --BC--
