Eagles Drop Season Opener to No. 8 Terps, 18-8

College Park, Md.--The Boston College women's lacrosse team dropped their season opener, 18-8, to the eighth-ranked Maryland Terrapins in College Park on Saturday afternoon. The game opened the ACC schedule for both teams.
Sophomore Jenna McCabe led the scoring for the Eagles, hitting the back of the net three times on the afternoon, including two free-position goals in the last 2:12 of the game. Graduate student Elizabeth Kadison scored one goal and an assist, and sophomore Emily Hannigan netted two goals. Freshman Lauren Costello and sophomore Lauren Fitzpatrick rounded out the Boston College scoring with one goal each.
Maryland's Krista Pellizzi led the Terps in the boxscore with five goals alongside three assists.
Fitzpatrick opened the scoring in the game's first minute after Kadison won the opening draw control, but Maryland scored 11 of the next 12 goals for a strong first half showing. The Terps outshot the Eagles, 23-14, in the first half and led at halftime, 10-3.
Boston College scored five times on 13 shots in the second half, including three of the last four goals of the game. Hannigan scored both her goals in the final 30 minutes, while Costello notched her first collegiate point when she struck with 49 seconds remaining in the game.
Junior Courtney Zwirko started in net for the Eagles and earned the decision. Zwirko made six saves in 21:12 before sophomore Katie Monaghan stepped in to make 14 saves in the final 38:48.
Both teams were dead even in ground balls, 19-19, while Maryland held just a slight 15-13 advantage in draw controls. Sophomore Maura Mahoney won a team-high five draw controls for the Eagles.
The Eagles return to action in their home opener Saturday, March 3 at the Newton Campus Turf Field. Boston College will take on Fairfield at 1:00 p.m.
