Newton, Mass. - The Boston College field hockey team scored a season-high five goals en route to a 5-2 victory over cross-town foe Northeastern Wednesday evening at the Newton Campus Field Hockey Complex. Five different Eagles recorded goals, including freshmen Chelsey Feole and Caitlin McGovern.
Less than two minutes into the game, Northeastern's Ashley Bascetta opened up the scoring with a direct penalty corner goal assisted by Sarah Eckhoff and Ashley D'Ambra. Boston College retaliated with three unanswered goals, including two in the final three minutes of the first half. Senior Caitlin Gillen knocked in her second goal of the season at 12:08 from a Crystal Frates pass and sophomore Bob Dirks and McGovern each tallied unassisted goals in the waning minutes of the half.
Northeastern scored the first goal of the second half when freshman Suzanne Hazelzet flicked a shot past Eagle goaltender Julia Berkowitz. The Eagles would not allow the Huskies a chance to come-back and only allowed one more shot on goal for the rest of the half. At 41:25, Frates put up the fourth Eagle goal, which was assisted by Gillen. Feole scored her first collegiate goal with 12 minutes remaining in regulation after an Amanda Chase shot on goal and a touch by sophomore Katie Quaglia.
Berkowitz finished with five saves, while Northeastern goaltender Colleen Duffy also ended the evening with five stops.
"It's a great win," says Head Coach Ainslee Lamb. "Northeastern is a reputable program and we have respect for them. That shows by the amount of preparation that went into this game and the level of intensity that was out on that field tonight."
"There was a lot of intensity out there tonight," says Gillen. "We knew there would be, and because of the crowd and the atmosphere, we kept the intensity up despite the score."
Boston College's next game will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when the team travels to Hamden, Connecticut to take on Quinnipiac.
