College Park, Md.--Sophomore Bob Dirks tallied seven points--three goals and one assist--to help the No. 8 Boston College field hockey team rebound from Saturday's ACC loss and beat Towson Sunday afternoon, 6-1, at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The hat trick is Dirks' second career hat trick and first since October 12, 2005 against Brown.
The outcome improves Boston College to 6-2 overall and drops Towson to 5-2.
The Eagles struck first at 6:28 on Kathleen Murphy's unassisted second season goal off a baseline run to an open net. Dirks scored the gamewinner 21 minutes later when she hammered a shot into the goal from the top of the circle. The first half ended with the 2-0 Boston College edge. The Eagles outshot Towson, 9-4, while Towson took the 4-1 advantage in penalty corners into halftime.
Dirks scored again about 15 minutes into the second half off another shot from the top of the circle. Freshman Chelsey Feole gave Boston College the 3-0 lead at 52:50 with Dirks picking up the assist.
Towson tried to get a rally together midway through the second half when Christina Bearman took a pass from Erica Houck and touched it into the net. That was the only scoring Towson could muster on the afternoon. Dirks took a pass from classmate Katie Quaglia to cap off her hat trick at 64:31. In the last few minutes, junior Brenna Leahy finished off the game's scoring with a direct penalty corner goal. Senior Caitlin Gillen and Quaglia received credits on the assist.
Eagles goaltender Julia Berkowitz allowed one goal and made four saves. Towson's Christina Armer stopped seven Eagle shots and allowed four goals in 58:13 in net. Michelle Cheek played the final 11:47, letting up two goals and making no saves.
Boston College returns to Newton next Friday, September 22, to host ACC foe Virginia. The Eagles' 1-0 win over Virginia last year marked their only ACC victory in 2005.
