Boston, Mass. - Ted Ratliff fired a complete game three-hitter for his fifth win of the season and Pete Frates drilled a two-run home run to give Boston College its eighth Beanpot Championship, defeating Harvard 10-2 at Fenway Park in Boston, Mass.
In BC's first meeting with Harvard, Ratliff held the Crimson to one hit in seven strong innings of work. However, the defending Beanpot champs took advantage of two walks in the top of the first Tuesday, as Lance Salsgiver hit a two-run double off the Green Monster to give Harvard a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles bounced back in the second, as Dave Preziosi walked to lead off the inning. Shawn McGill followed with a single and Eric Campbell was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A Jett Ruiz fielder's choice groundout cut the deficit in half and Ryne Reynoso followed with a double to right field to tie the score. The Eagles then took a 4-2 lead when Frates singled up the middle, driving in Ruiz and Reynoso.
BC added another in the fourth, as Campbell doubled and advanced to second on a Ruiz groundout. Reynoso would follow with a single to right to record his second RBI of the day and give the Eagles a 5-2 lead.
Ratliff settled in, allowing only two hits through the final eight innings, and received some fine defensive efforts from Frates in center, who made sprawling catch in center on a sinking line drive, and McGuire who ran down a deep fly ball in left.
In the sixth, Frates sealed the championship by blasting a Hampton Foushee offering into the Fenway bullpen for his fourth home run of the season, earning a post-game Gatorade bath for homering in the hallowed ballpark. Frates ended the day with four hits and helped give the Eagles its third Beanpot title in four seasons.
The Eagles will face UMass tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Shea Field.
