Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Eagles were looking to come back with a win after a tough loss last weekend to the No. 6 Mercyhurst Lakers. The Eagles faced No. 2 New Hampshire Saturday afternoon for the third and final regular season match up between the two teams. The Eagles defeated the Wildcats in their last meeting on Nov. 5 for the first time in 35 meetings between the two teams. The Wildcats however would avenge their previous loss, topping the Eagles by a score of 6-1.
The opening period was dominated by UNH as they tallied 15 shots on goal. The Wildcats peppered senior goalie Alison Quandt throughout the first period forcing her to make save after save. Finally with just under six minutes left in the period sophomore Jennifer Hitchcock put the Wildcats on top with her 16th goal of the season off a pass from freshman Sam Faber. New Hampshire would strike again at 17:32 as junior Lindsey Caleo snuck the puck past Quandt off an assist by junior Jackie Wedster to give the Wildcats a 2-0 cushion going into the second period.
Both teams played tough defense throughout the second period. But it would be the Wildcats who would continue their barrage of shots on the Eagles' net. Quandt continued to make key saves but finally at 16:44 the Wildcats extended their lead to make it a 3-0 game. Faber notched the Wildcat's third goal of the game while tallying her second point of the afternoon. Hitchcock recorded an assist on the goal for her second point as well and sophomore Sadie Wright-Ward was also credited with assisting on the play.
In the final period of play New Hampshire scored three more goals as they extended its lead to 6-0. Sophomore Leah Craig and junior Shannon Clement both scored their first goals of the game. Craig scored at 6:05 in the third while Clement scored a power-play goal at 8:18. Three minutes later, Hitchcock scored her second goal of the game off a pass from Faber for the second time and Wright-Ward.
Faber and Hitchcock led the Wildcat's scoring attack both tallying one goal and two assists each for three points. Eleven Wildcats recorded a point in the win.
But the Eagles who refused to be shutout scored their only goal of the game at 16:39 as sophomore Cristin Stuart notched her second goal in as many games off a pass from leading scorer sophomore Deborah Spillane. Spillane continues to lead the Eagles with 27 points on the season.
Quandt eventually finished the game with 32 saves. She continues to lead the Eagles defense as she has made at least 19 saves in the last nine out of 10 games for the team. Junior goalie Melissa Bourdon made 14 saves to preserve the win for the Wildcats.
The Eagles will travel to Harvard University on Tuesday, Feb. 7 to take on the Northeastern Huskies in the first round of the women's Beanpot. The puck drops at 5 p.m.
