Newton, Mass.--The Boston College and Connecticut field hockey teams split two games last year, but it was the Huskies who took the upper hand, 4-3, in Wednesday night's overtime battle at the Newton Campus Field. UConn's Lizzy Peijs tallied six points in the game, while Boston College's sophomore Bob Dirks scored twice, including the game-tying goal. The sixth-ranked Eagles fall to 14-4 (2-2) on the season and the ninth-ranked Huskies improve to 17-2 (4-1).
In the Huskies' only penalty corner of the half, Peijs converted by taking the push in on the left side of the circle, moved the ball through defenders and shot a rocket past sophomore goaltender Julia Berkowitz. Sophomore Kathleen Murphy tied the score at 1-1 on an Eagles penalty corner more than 20 minutes later. Sophomore Katie Quaglia, who stick-stopped the ball, earned the assist. UConn scored two unanswered goals, one in field play and another on a penalty stroke, to end the first half.
The Huskies outshot the Eagles, 5-2, during the first stanza and made one save, while Berkowitz finished the half without stopping a shot on goal.
Dirks scored her 18th and 19th goals of the season, both on the penalty corner. The first one, at 43:02, started with Quaglia pushing the ball in and senior Caitlin Gillen stopping the ball. Dirks took the ball at 10 yards out to beat Huskies goalie Briana Koza. Junior Crystal Frates pushed the ball into play at 67:48 to Quaglia. Dirks took the ball from the top of the circle for the game-tying score with under three minutes to play in regulation.
In the overtime period, UConn had excellent opportunities to score on shots by Peijs and Lindsey Leck that sailed over the cage. At 6:33 into the period, excellent passing in front of the net during a penalty corner gave Meagan Hoffmann the opportunity to strike for the gamewinner at the right post. Peijs was credited for the assist and her sixth point of the night. UConn slightly edged Boston College in both shots, 13-11, and penalty corners, 8-7, for the game.
The Eagles will play their season finale and honor their seniors Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against Wake Forest in Newton.
