Orono, Maine--The star of the game, sophomore Meghan Fardelmann, scored a goal and registered two assists for Boston College women's ice hockey in its 5-3 win over the University of Maine at Alfond Arena. The win, marking the Eagles' first Hockey East game of the season, improves Boston College to 3-0-0 (1-0-0 HE) and drops Maine to 1-5-0 (0-2-0 HE). Freshman Kelli Stack recorded the gamewinner, and her first collegiate goal, in the second period.
Boston College started the scoring ten minutes into the game when Fardelmann, who recorded a hat trick last Saturday against Quinnipiac, shot the puck past Maine goalie Rachel Gettings on the power-play to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead. Freshmen Stack and Molly Schaus earned the assists. Fardelmann also took part in the Eagles' second goal four minutes later when freshman Anna McDonald potted a short-handed goal at 14:13. Boston College ended the first period out-shooting Maine, 12-7, and going 1-for-2 on the power-play.
Two minutes into the second period, the Eagles struck again when sophomore Maggie Taverna and freshman Gabrielle Beaudry moved the puck up the ice to sophomore Becky Zavisza who scored her second goal of the season. At 6:51, Sonia Corriveau converted a power-play for the Black Bears, with Amy Stech assisting on the score. During another Eagle power-play opportunity, Stack's goal assisted by Fardelman closed out the scoring in the second period and increased the Boston College lead, 4-1, going into the final stanza.
Thunstrom scored the Eagles' second short-handed goal of the game at 3:27 into the third period and Jenna Cowan retaliated for the Black Bears four minutes later for a 5-2 score, both goals unassisted. Maine continued its rally even-strength with 3:12 remaining when Corriveau scored her second goal of the game. Despite pulling Gettings in the final 30 seconds for an extra skater, the Black Bears fell short in the end.
Hockey East's Rookie of the Week Molly Schaus made 14 saves in goal for Boston College while Gettings stopped 27 shots. The Eagles outshot the Black Bears, 32-17, and went 2-for-8 on the power-play. Maine gave up two short-handed goals and went 2-for-14 in its power-play opportunities.
