Charlottesville, Va. -- The 18th-ranked Boston College field hockey team posted its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville. The Eagles topped Virginia, 1-0, to improve to 6-2 on the season and 1-1 in the ACC. The Cavaliers are 5-4 (0-1 ACC).
Despite taking just one shot in the second half, Boston College capitalized in the first half, scoring in the 22nd minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish en route to its conference win.
BC broke Virginia's 176:52 minute shutout streak with a Bob Dirks (Malden, Netherlands) goal midway through the first half. The lone goal was scored as Dirks collected a loose ball just above the 25-yard line and took the ball to the top left of the circle and scored to the opposite post at 21:58.
Boston College's Jillian Savoy (Lexington, Mass.) improved to 6-2 in net and collected her second shutout of the season.
Boston College will next host ACC foe Duke on Saturday, October 1 at 2:00 p.m.
