Providence, R.I. - The No. 18 Boston College field hockey team posted a 4-3 non-conference win over Providence College Wednesday evening at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. With the win, the Eagles improve to 5-2 overall. The Friars are 2-7 on the season.
Providence jumped out of the gates early, scoring 30 seconds into the game. The Friars added an insurance goal 14 minutes later, taking a 2-0 lead. Boston College, however, answered back with two goals of its own in the first half, tying the game at intermission. Caitlin Gillen (New Preston, Conn.) and Bob Dirks (Malden, Netherlands) put the Eagles back into the game.
Boston College opened the second half where it left the first, scoring another goal to take a 3-2 lead. Crystal Frates (Woodstock, Vt.) scored on a Kristen Madden (Concord, N.H.) assist to give the Eagles the lead. Providence, however, scored a goal of its own to tie the game once more.
The Eagles scored the game-winning goal with just under four minutes to play in regulation. Bronwen Kelly (Mississauga, Ontario) connected on a Madden cross for the win. Jillian Savoy (Lexington, Mass.) collected four saves in net, improving to 5-2 on the season.
Boston College will return to ACC action this weekend, traveling to Virginia Saturday afternoon. The Eagles return home October 1, when they host Duke at 2:00 p.m.
