Cambridge, Mass. - The Boston College field hockey team dropped a tough 2-1 game to cross-town rival Boston University Friday night at Jack Barry Field on the campus of MIT in Cambridge. With the loss, the Eagles stand at 1-1 on the new season. The Terriers are also 1-1.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half with BU outshooting the Eagles, 5-2. Jillian Savoy (Lexington, Mass.) posted three saves in the first 35 minutes to preserve the scoreless tie. The Terriers, however, would break that tie with the game's first goal at the 29:12 mark of the first half. Ten minutes later, they would add an insurance goal, one that would stand as the game winner.
Boston College's Kristen Madden (Concord, N.H.) scored her team's only goal with 8:58 remaining in the game. Cutting the BU lead in half, Madden persevered through two put-back attempts on a penalty corner play, finally finding the back of the net on her second straight shot. The Eagles called timeout with 3:11 to play, but could not force overtime.
Boston College will host its first game on the new turf field Sunday, facing Kent State at 1:00 p.m.
