NEWTON, MASS. - The Boston College field hockey team posted its first shutout victory of the season with an impressive 4-0 win over Hofstra Sunday afternoon at the Newton Field Hockey Complex on the Newton Campus of Boston College. The Eagles improved to 4-1 on the season. The Pride stand at 4-2, losing its second game in as many days.
Boston College scored what would become the game-winning goal at the 17:33 mark in the first half. Sophomore Tara Fernandes (Mississauga, Ontario) put home a rebound from a penalty corner play for the hosts. It was the first of three penalty corner goals for the Eagles on the afternoon.
The Eagles added three insurance goals in the second half as Crystal Frates (Woodstock, Vt.), Bronwen Kelly (Mississauga, Ontario), and Bob Dirks (Malden, Netherlands) all scored. Frates' goal came just 26 seconds into the second half while Kelly's and Dirks' goals both came with under 15 minutes to play.
Kristen Madden (Concord, N.H.) added two assists in the win. Jillian Savoy (Lexington, Mass.) and Julia Berkowitz (Amherst, Mass.) both saw time in net for the win, Savoy collecting seven saves.
The Eagles will make their ACC debut next Saturday in an 11 am game against Maryland.
