Field Hockey Opens Season With 4-2 Win At Massachusetts

Amherst, Mass. - The Boston College field hockey team opened the 2005 campaign with a 4-2 win at Massachusetts Tuesday night at Garber Field on the campus of UMass in Amherst. With the win, the Eagles stand at 1-0 on the young season. UMass falls to 0-2.
Massachusetts took a quick 1-0 lead just three minutes into play, but the host lead didn't last long as the Eagles tied the game a minute later when Lauren Parks (Norwood, Mass.) connected on a penalty corner. She was assisted by Bronwen Kelly (Mississauga, Ontario) and Alyssa Emrick (Bangor, Pa.). Boston College took a 2-1 lead less than a minute after that, scoring on a Crystal Frates (Woodstock, Vt.) open-field goal. The Eagles would hold that 2-1 lead through halftime.
UMass came out of the gates strong in the second half, scoring on its first shot of the stanza. The Minutewomen connected on a penalty corner, their sixth of the game, to knot the game at two. Once again, the Eagles struck back quickly, reclaiming the lead on a Kristen Madden (Concord, N.H.) goal that resulted from a broken penalty corner play. Madden netted her second goal of the game on another penalty corner, giving the Eagles an insurance goal and the final 4-2 margin.
Madden scored two goals while Emrick and Kelly each posted a pair of assists on the evening. Jillian Savoy (Lexington, Mass.) collected seven saves in net.
Boston College will travel to MIT in Cambridge Friday night for a 6:00 p.m. game against Boston University. The Eagles will host their first game on their new turf field Sunday, when they face Kent State at 1:00 p.m.
