Huntington Beach, Calif. - Heavy rains in the southern California area cancelled nearly all the games on day one of the Worth Invitational at Cal State Fullerton. Boston College's games with Oregon State and Cal State Fullerton were both cancelled. A game was added, however, and the Eagles earned a 1-0 victory over Bowling Green on day one. The game was played at Golden West Junior College in Huntington Beach. With the win, the Eagles are 7-6 on the season.
Boston College pushed across the game's only run in the sixth, putting runners on the corners thanks to a Jenna Macchi (Milford, Mass.) walk and Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah) single. Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) followed, smashing a shot off the third baseman's glove, scoring Macchi with the game winner.
Thompson earned the win and improved to 4-3 in the circle this season. She scattered four hits and struck out four in the complete game shutout. Liz Vrabel was the hard-luck loser, allowing a run on four hits and striking out 10. All eight hits in the game came from different players.
Boston College is scheduled to face Illinois State (12:00) and Stanford (4:30) today.
