Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College senior forward Kerri Sanders scored two goals to lift the women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 win over the University of Connecticut at Kelley Rink on Sunday. The Eagles split the weekend Hockey East series with the Huskies.
In the opening frame, both teams put six shots on goal. At 2:05 into the first, Colleen Harris was called for an obstruction-holding penalty. During the power-play the Huskies fired three shots on goal, but BC goalie Alison Quandt shut them down. The Eagles had one power-play opportunity in the period but were unable to take advantage.
The teams headed into the first intermission with a scoreless tie.
In the middle stanza, the Eagles opened up the scoring. Krystal Strassman beat Connecticut's defense and fired a shot on Kaitlyn Shain. Kerri Sanders followed up the rebound and blasted a slap shot by the goalie from the top of the crease to give the Eagles a lead. Strassman and Kim Meagher earned assists on the score.
Connecticut (9-11-6, 5-5-2) evened the score at one at 15:42. Jill McInnis was called for a holding penalty 37 seconds earlier, leaving the Huskies with a man advantage. Britney Chandler lifted to puck past Quandt's left side to tie the game.
With less than one minute remaining in the period, the Eagles capitalized. One second after their power play ended, Sanders connected for her second goal of the game and fifth of the season. Sarah Feldman crossed the puck in front of the net and Sanders finished it. Colleen Harris also assisted on the tally.
Through two periods of play Connecticut had out-shot BC 14-11.
In the third, Quandt was unstoppable. The junior made 11 saves, including three during Connecticut's two power-play chances. The defense made the difference for the Eagles, especially in the final frame. BC shut down both of Connecticut's power plays in the period and the Eagle defense controlled the neutral zone in the final minutes of play.
BC finished the day 0-for-4 on its power-play opportunities, while Connecticut was 1-for-6 on its chances.
Quandt stopped 24 shots on goal for the Eagles and Shain made 11 saves for the Huskies.
BC (7-15-3, 3-8-2) will play in the first round of the Beanpot Tournament on Tuesday night. The Eagles will face off against Boston University at 5 p.m. at Northeastern's Matthews Arena.
