Boston, Mass. - Deborah Spillane netted a shorthanded goal at 4:21 in the third period to lift the Boston College women's ice hockey to a 2-1 victory over the University of Maine on Saturday at Matthews Arena. With the win, the Eagles move one point ahead of the Black Bears for fourth place in the Hockey East standings.
In the opening period Maine (9-17-4, 5-10-2) out-shot BC 11-7. In the first 10 minutes of the frame, the Black Bears pushed the puck in BC's zone, but the defense and goalie Alison Quandt denied all of their chances.
The Eagles jumped on the board first at 13:48. Sarah Feldman picked up the loose puck at the top of the left circle and found an open Jill McInnis. McInnis fired a shot on goal and Spillane deflected the puck from the corner of the goal past Maine's goalie, Rachel Gettings. The goal is Spillane's 16th of the season.
BC (9-17-4, 5-9-3) killed Maine's only power-play chance of the first. The Black Bears were able to put two shots on goal, but Quandt stopped both attempts.
BC headed into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead.
In the middle stanza, Maine evened the score at one. With a man advantage, the Black Bears connected at 2:21. Tristan Desmet scored off a pass from Kate Sunstrum.
The Eagles' best chance of the period came on the power play. Sarah Carlson blasted a shot on goal but was unable to convert.
After two periods of play Maine out-shot BC 22-11. The two teams headed into the second intermission locked at one.
In the third period, the Eagles put six shots on goal. After a roughing penalty on Cristin Stuart, BC was left a man short. While on the power play, a Maine defender attempted to clear the puck from its zone. Spillane blocked the puck and created a one-on-one with Gettings. Spillane forced the goalie down and backhanded the puck past her to give the Eagles a 2-1 edge. The tally is BC's third shorthanded goal of the season.
With 1:21 remaining in the third, Carlson was called for a checking penalty. The Black Bears pulled Gettings to create a 6-on-4 situation. Quandt made two key saves down the stretch to hold off the Black Bears.
The Eagles finished the day 0-for-3 on their power-play chances, while the Black Bears were 1-for-5 on their opportunities.
Quandt made 32 saves in the win, while Gettings stopped 15 shots for Maine.
BC will close out the weekend series with Maine tomorrow at Kelley Rink. The puck drops at 1 p.m.
