Providence, R.I. - The Boston College women's ice hockey team scored four goals in the third period to beat No. 10 ranked Providence College 4-1 at Schneider Arena. BC goalie Alison Quandt made 42 saves to lead the Eagles to their first victory over the Friars since March 3, 2002.
In the opening period, Providence (15-10-3, 10-4-1) out-shot BC 10-8. Quandt turned away all 10 shots she faced in the first. BC (8-16-4, 4-8-3) had two power-play chances in the frame but was unable to capitalize.
The two teams headed into the first intermission locked at a scoreless tie.
In the middle stanza, Quandt continued to shut down Providence's attack. The junior made 14 saves in the period, including five shots during the Friars' power play.
After two periods of play, Providence out-shot BC 24-9.
At 6:21 into the third, the Eagles took advantage of a power-play situation and opened up the scoring. Michelle Lombardi took a pass from Krystal Strassman and beat Providence's goalie for her third goal of the season. Twelve seconds later, the Eagles extended their lead when Sarah Courtney connected for her sixth goal of the season off a pass from Kim Meagher.
At 7:14, the Eagles struck again for their third straight goal within 53 seconds. Cristin Stuart netted her third goal of the season with the assist by Colleen Harris.
Providence was able to squeeze one shot by Quandt in the third. At 8:39 Rush Zimmerman put the Friars on the board. Quandt stopped 18 shots in the final frame.
Deborah Spillane completed the game for BC at 11:26 with an unassisted score. The goal gives Spillane 15 on the season.
BC capitalized on 1-of-6 of its power-play chances and held the Friars scoreless on their four opportunities.
Quandt finished the game with 42 saves, while Providence's Amy Thomas and Lauren Florio combined for 15 stops.
BC will close out the Hockey East home-and-home series with Providence tomorrow at Kelley Rink. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
