A two-point effort from junior defenseman Peter Harrold lifted hockey past Harvard, 4-1, in the consolation game of the Beanpot championship. The Crimson (15-7-2, 12-4-1) took an overtime loss to Northeastern in the tournament opener. The Eagles (19-4-5, 12-1-5) take their 21st third-place finish with the victory.
The game began with opposing sides trading shots and quality scoring opportunities. BC's Chris Collins was at the end of a pass through crease and came close to banging home a one-timer.
BC out-shot the Crimson 15-7 in the opening frame. Collins accounted for three of those as the game went into the first intermission scoreless.
1:15 into the second, BC capitalized on its first power play. Dan Bertram, at the right point, slid the puck to Greg Lauze in the left slot. Lauze put a hard wrister on the net and Ned Havern redirected the puck into the net past the Dov Grumet-Morris' left skate for the first goal of the evening.
The tally was Havern's third in the past two games.
The Eagles expanded the lead at 4:15. The play started with Mike Brennan took a pass at BC's blue line from John Adams. Brennan dumped the puck in and a hard bounced off of the boards gave Dan Bertram a good look at the net. The freshman went top-shelf for his eighth goal of the season.
Harvard did not put a shot on net until 8:33 remained in the period.
Stephen Gionta put the Eagles up 3-0 at 15:10 in the second. Also on the power play, Lauze put a shot on net from the left point. As the puck slid through traffic in the left face-off circle, Gionta deflected the puck into the top of the net. Harrold was credited with a helper on the play.
With 2:31 remaining in the middle frame, Schneider suffered a left knee sprain and was replaced by senior Matti Kaltiainen. Schneider did not return in the game.
In the second, BC put 18 shots on net to Harvard's three.
Harvard decreased the lead to two with a power-play goal from Tom Walsh.
Harvard pulled Grumet-Morris with 1:12 on the clock and with 15 second remaining in regulation, Harrold took the puck down and scored on the empty net.
For the second straight game, Harrold posted one goal and one assist.
The Eagles return to action this Friday night as they host UMass-Lowell. The 7 p.m. game is the first of the home-and-home series with the River Hawks.
