Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Eagles tied the Yale University Bulldogs in overtime, 1-1, on Saturday afternoon at Yale. Freshmen defender Maggie Taverna scored the Eagles' lone goal on a power play at 12:56 in the first period, just 33 seconds into BC's only power-play attempt of the day.
Freshmen goaltender Johanna Ellison stopped 37 of 38 shots. Yale threw everything they had at Ellison, especially in the third period, but the freshman goaltender helped the Eagles (3-2-4, 2-1-1 Hockey East) maintain a 1-0 lead until late in the third period. Ellison had 13 saves in the third period, but with 23 seconds left in regulation Yale pulled their goaltender and Kristin Savard snuck the puck past Ellison to tie the game, 1-1.
"It was a good game," head coach Tom Mutch said. "Johanna Ellison played very well. It took Yale six on five to finally score on us. We got a power-play goal early on but it was a hard fought game. Yale is a very good team. I liked the way we played tonight. It feels like a loss because they scored so late, but as we reflect on this game it's a pretty good game. This will be a building game and down the road and we will definitely learn a lot. It was a real goaltending duel. Overall, I love the way our kids competed, especially on the road."
Both goaltenders exhibited outstanding play as both teams had close chances to score in overtime. Ellison made five saves in overtime to preserve the tie.
The Eagles went 1-for-1 on the power play and held Dartmouth to 0-for-2 on their power play attempts.
The Eagles will return home to conference play next Saturday, Nov. 19 as they take on the Connecticut Huskies in their first meeting of the season.
