
Women's Ice Hockey Wins Overtime Thriller

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The women's ice hockey team won their season opener over a tough Quinnipiac team, 4-3 in overtime. Preseason All-USCHO third team selection, sophomore Deb Spillane netted the game-winning goal, 2:49 into the overtime period. It was Spillane's second goal of the night. The Eagles are now 1-0-0 on the season, while the Bobcats drop to 0-1-1.
Freshman Meghan Fardelmann opened up the scoring for the Eagles in the fourth minute of the first period on an unassisted goal. Fardelmann had four shots on the night in her collegiate debut.
Quinnipiac answered back one minute later when Hayley McMeekin netted her first goal of the season at 4:44. However, the Eagles kept their composure and two minutes later sophomore Sarah Feldman scored on power play, with Spillane picking up the assist.
Quinnipiac opened the scoring one minute into the second period. Junior Vicky Graham collected a pass from Trudy Reyns and slotted it home for her first of the season.
The Eagles tried to create offense in the second period unsuccessfully but outshot Quinnipiac 10-8.
Spillane scored a shorthanded goal at 10:09 in the third period, this time with Feldman picking up the assist. When Quinnipiac's McMeekin tallied the equalizer three minutes later, the Eagles and Bobcats were headed into overtime.
Spillane tallied the game-winning goal at 2:49, with Cristin Stuart providing the crucial assist.
The Eagles outshot the Bobcats 37-25 throughout three periods as well as the overtime period. Junior goaltender Alison Quandt collected 22 saves, including one in overtime as well as her first win of the season.
The Eagles return to action on Sunday, Oct. 16, when they host their first Hockey East opponent, Maine at 2:00 p.m.
