
Women's Ice Hockey Falls To Northeastern

Boston, Mass. - The Boston College women's ice hockey team fell to Northeastern, 3-1, at Matthews Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles split the weekend home-and-home series with the Huskies, giving them a total of six points in Hockey East on the season.
In the opening period Northeastern (3-15-1, 2-6-0) got on the board first with a power-play goal. Ashley Bielawski beat BC goalie Alison Quandt from the corner of the crease to give the Huskies a 1-0 edge.
BC (6-12-3, 2-7-2) evened the score four minutes later at 8:16. Defenseman Sarah Carlson received a pass from Kerri Sanders and skated through Northeastern's defenders. The senior flipped the puck from the left post past Maria Hourihan's glove side. The tally is Carlson's third and Sanders' twelfth assist of the season.
The Huskies out-shot the Eagles 12-8 in the first. There were seven penalties (three on BC and four on Northeastern) in the period.
BC started the middle frame with a one-man advantage after a hooking penalty called on Northeastern at 19:15 in the first. The Eagles put three shots on goal but were unable to capitalize.
Sarah Feldman had a solid scoring chance five minutes into the period. The freshman found herself free at the top of the crease but fired just wide of the right post.
BC's best opportunity of the second came when Feldman skated behind Northeastern's net and passed to a charging Kim Meagher. Meagher blasted a one-timer at Hourihan but the goalie made the glove save.
In the middle stanza BC out-shot Northeastern 18-6, bringing the game total through two to 26-18 in favor of the Eagles.
The Eagles headed into the third short-handed after a holding penalty on Sarah Courtney at 18:44 and tripping penalty on Sarah Feldman at 19:27. BC was able to hold Northeastern scoreless on its power-play chances at the start.
At 5:08 into the third, with another 5-on-3 advantage the Huskies capitalized. Lori DiGiacomo netted a goal to give Northeastern a 2-1 edge. Bielawski added to the lead less than a minute later with her second goal of the game.
The Eagles pulled Quandt with 1:58 remaining in play, but were unable to put the puck past Hourihan.
Quandt made 24 saves, while Hourihan stopped 35 shots on the day.
BC finished the day 0-for-8 on its power-play chances, while Northeastern went 2-for-5 on its chances.
BC will travel to Erie, Pa. to face off against Mercyhurst next weekend. The first game of the two-game series is Saturday, January 22 at 2 p.m.
