Junior forward Patrick Eaves registered two goals and one assist and Boston College's special-teams units netted four goals as the second-ranked Eagles earned a 6-3 Hockey East victory over eighth-ranked Boston University before a sellout crowd of 7,884 fans in Kelley Rink.
Eaves' linemates on the Eagles' top line - seniors Ryan Shannon and Dave Spina - each recorded one goal and three assists. For both Shannon and Spina, Friday's four-point performances were career bests.
BU opened the game with a power-play goal from Brad Zancanaro. The Eagles quickly responded when Spina found Eaves in front of the net for BC's first goal. Eaves took the pass from Spina, playing along the goal-line extended and shot it through the legs of BU goalie John Curry.
With the score tied 1-1 after one period, BC opened a three-goal advantage with a shorthanded tally, a power-play goal and an even-strength score. Shannon gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead at 2:43, netting his seventh goal of the season with BC (13-3-3, 7-1-3 Hockey East) playing one man down. He intercepted a pass at the BC blue line and scored uncontested.
Sophomore Brian Boyle doubled the BC lead with a power-play goal at 15:35. Boyle took the pass at the point from Spina and buried it stick-side on Curry. Eaves made the score 4-1 at 17:25 when Shannon found him in front of the net with a tape-to-tape pass that found the net.
The visiting Terriers narrowed the difference to 4-2 on freshman Peter MacArthur's goal 18 seconds later. The goal was MacArthur's 11th tally of the season.
BU (13-8-0, 9-2-0 Hockey East) drew to within one goal on freshman Ryan Monaghan's goal at 8:52 of the third period.
Spina gave BC a 5-3 margin with a power-play goal at 14:43. Boyle took the initial shot from the right side and Shannon attempted the bury the rebound. Shannon's shot landed at far post where Spina waited and slipped it in.
Senior Ryan Murphy closed the scoring with a shorthanded, empty-net goal at 19:19.
Boston College outshot Boston University in each period and finished with a 39-22 shot advantage.
BC freshman goaltender Cory Schneider earned the win, making 19 saves. The victory raised Schneider's record to 6-0-3 on the season.
BU's Curry made 33 stops.
The BC victory ties the season series at 1-1. BU won the season's first meeting, 3-2, on Dec. 3. The two teams will meet for the final game of their regular-season series on Saturday, Jan. 15 at BU's Agganis Arena. The Eagles and Terriers will also meet in the first round of the 53rd annual Beanpot on Monday, Feb. 7.
