Syracuse, N.Y. - The fourth-seeded Boston College softball team was eliminated from the 2004 BIG EAST Tournament by Villanova, 3-1. The tournament, being held at the Softball Stadium at Skytop on the campus of Syracuse University, will crown a champion tomorrow afternoon. With the loss, Boston College stands at 33-25 overall.
Boston College trailed the whole game, but managed to tie the ballgame at one in the fifth inning. After finding themselves down 1-0 after allowing a solo home run in the fourth, the Eagles tied the game when freshman Colleen Reiche (Tucson, Ariz.) delivered a pinch hit two-out single that scored classmate Britney Thompson (Bountiful, Utah). Thompson led-off the inning and was hit by the pitch.
Villanova went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth on three hits and one Eagle error. The Wildcats added another insurance run in the sixth inning on two more hits, pounding out a total of six on the evening.
Tekae Malandris (Chula Vista, Calif.) took the loss on the mound, pitching 4.0 innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits. She has three strikeouts.
The Eagles collected just two hits on the afternoon, the RBI single by Reiche and a base hit by Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.).
Boston College will await NCAA Tournament pairings, with the hopes of receiving an at-large bid.
