Senior Garrett Greer (Peabody, Mass.) slammed a three-run home run but it was not enough as the Boston College baseball team (7-14) fell to the Northeastern Huskies, who scored the game's final four runs, in a 4-3 decision, Tuesday, March 30, in Brookline, Mass.
Joe Martinez picked up the loss; he was responsible for all four Husky runs, allowing five hits and three walks through 6.2 innings. The Huskies tallied all their runs with two outs in the seventh inning. Miguel Paquette tripled to lead off that frame and three batters later, Mike Steinberg singled to drive him home. On a full-count pitch, Brad Czarnowski provided NU's second triple of the stanza, driving in both Steinberg and Matt Morizio, who walked to reach base, knotting the game at three. Mike Gauthier (Salem, Mass.) relieved Martinez then walked NU's next batter before delivering a wild pitch that scored Czarnowski for the game-deciding tally.
The game started off well for the visiting Eagles, who grabbed the 3-0 lead in the third inning on three hits, the most crucial of which - a long ball to left field by Garrett Greer - plated three runs. The Eagles also stole three of their four bases for the game in that frame.
The BC defense committed five errors, averting bases-loaded opportunities for the Huskies in both the first and eighth innings. Down but not out, BC pitched its own threat, placing a man at first and third with two outs in the top of the ninth, but Jim Madison's controversial third-called strike on Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.) ended the game. Madison allowed two hits through 3.0 innings with three walks and five strikeouts.
BC plays at Rhode Island, Wednesday, March 31. Game time is 3 p.m.
