The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Boston College, 4-2, on Saturday, March 13 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.
In their regular season finale, the Friars jumped out to an early lead as junior Rush Zimmerman tallied her 16th goal of the season at 4:14 of the first period. Senior Darlene Stephenson and junior Danielle Bourgette each assisted on the play. Freshman Sonny Watrous closed out the period with her 15th goal of the season with 46 seconds remaining in the first. Providence outshot Boston College, 15-8, in the period.
The Eagles put the only point on the board in the second period as Sarah Carlson (Copper City, Alaska) was able to beat senior goaltender Amy Quinlan at 12:46 of the period. The Friars outshot the Eagles, 25-6, in the period but goaltender Alison Quandt (Wayland, Mass.) turned aside all of the Friars' shots.
Junior Ashley Payton gave Providence a two-goal cushion as she scored at 14:02 of the third with the assists awarded to Watrous and Zimmerman. Boston College, already on the power play, pulled their goaltender with under four minutes remaining in the game to give themselves a two player advantage. The Eagles capitalized on the move as Nancy Gillis (Needham, Mass.) tallied their second goal of the game with 3:30 remaining. With the Boston College goaltender on the bench once again, Bourgette received the puck from Quinlan and fired it down the ice into the empty net with 1:12 remaining to secure the victory for the Friars.
Providence outshot Boston College, 47-19. Quinlan earned her fourth win of the season making 17 saves, as the Friars improved to 19-13-2 overall and 14-5-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Boston College fell to 6-22-3 overall and 1-18-1 in HOCKEY EAST.
