Women's Ice Hockey Falls to Providence, 5-2
February 22, 2004 | Women's Hockey
The Boston College women's ice hockey squad fell to visiting Providence, 5-2, Sunday, in Chestnut Hill. The Friars improved to 15-11-2 and 10-3-1 in Hockey East while the Eagles dropped to 5-17-3 and 0-13-1 in the league.
The Friars drew first blood as forward Ashley Payton converted a goal on the team's first strike, 36 seconds into the game; Danielle Bourgette was credited with an assist on that tally. Megan Scully?s (Bound Brook, N.J.) charging penalty left BC a man short and unable to defend Rush Zimmerman's redirect of Darlene Stephenson's pass 10 minutes later to balloon PC's advantage to two. Meredith Roth also helped out on that goal.
Both teams scored twice in the second period. BC?s Michelle Lombardi (Milton, Mass.) and Jill McInnis (Quincy, Mass.) set up Kaitlin McGrath?s (Yarmouthport, Mass.) goal at the 12:52 mark, slicing the Friars' advantage in half. It didn't take Providence long to answer, just under three minutes later, Meredith Roth scored another man-up goal with assists from Karen Thatcher and Hilary Greaves at 10:01. The Friars converted on 2-of-5 power-play opportunities in the game, taking 11 shots.
A minute before BC made it 3-2, BC's Lisa Davis (Falmouth, Mass.) made a spectacular diving stop at Karen Thatcher's slap shot from the point still in the second period. Junior forward Heidi Seidewand (Groton, Mass.) then put back her own carom in front of the net, receiving a little help from Michelle Lombardi for her power-play goal 13:40 into the period.
Kelli Halcisak accounted for PC's final two goals within 41 seconds of play, The first one came, 23 seconds before the horn sounded at the end of period two. Then her second occurred 19 seconds into the third and final frame. On those goals, she was assisted by Payton, Thatcher and Bourgette.
Lisa Davis accumulated 39 saves on the night while her PC counterpart, Amy Thomas, picked up 13.
BC travels to Maine, Feb. 27. Game time is 4 p.m.
