Senior forward Dave Spina's goal with 23 seconds remaining in overtime lifted fifth-ranked Boston College to a 2-1 Hockey East victory over Northeastern before 5,247 fans in Kelley Rink. The goal was Spina's team-leading third game-winning goal of the season (his third in BC's last five games).
Boston College (7-3-3, 4-1-3) took a 1-0 lead on freshman Matt Greene's goal at 3:10 of the first period. Greene parked in front of the net and took a pass from fellow first-year Dan Bertram and banged it home.
The goal was the first of Greene's young collegiate career and his third career point. Joe Rooney was also credited with the helper on the score.
Northeastern (6-8-1, 3-4-0) evened the score on junior Mike Morris' power-play goal at 5:55 of the second period. Jon Awe took the initial shot on BC goaltender Cory Schneider. The puck got to the stick of Jason Guerriero, who took a slap shot that Morris deflected past Schneider.
Each team registered 10 shots on net in the scoreless third period. Northeastern's best opportunity to got go up in the final frame was on a breakaway by Jared Mudryk. Breaking out of the neutral zone, he went one on one with Schneider, only to be denied by the freshman's right blocker.
Northeastern recorded the first two shots of overtime, before BC tallied two shots to set the stage for Spina's winning goal. The puck began buried in the BC zone. Peter Harrold took possession and brought it out to the blue line.
Harrold made a quick dish to Patrick Eaves at center-ice. Eaves then put the puck right on the stick of Spina, streaking down the right side. Fending off a defenseman, Spina beat the man wide, coming at the goal from the right. He faked short-side, NU goalie Keni Gibson went down and he slid the puck into the net at the far post for the game-winner.
Schneider made 28 saves to raise his collegiate record to 4-0-3, including two wins over Northeastern.
Northeastern's Gibson stopped 35 shots.
BC out-shot Northeastern 37-29 in 64:37 of play.
BC is off for over two weeks, playing its next game against No.12 Cornell in Estero Beach, Fla. on Tuesday, December 28. BC will not host a team until BU comes to Kelley Rink on Friday, January 14, 2005.
