Men's Hockey Defeated By Harvard, 3-1 No. 1 Eagles take second loss of season
It was a packed house at the Bright Hockey Center, where Boston College (4-2-1, 2-0-1) took a tough loss to Harvard University (3-2-1, 2-2-1) by a score of 3-1. The Eagles lost their first since October 22 in front of a crowd of 2,776.
Dave Spina struck at 1:02 in the first. The shot was the first of the game and was assisted by Stephen Gionta. Gionta hit Spina with a nice outlet along the left side. Spina made a quick fake inside then went short-side on Harvard goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris. The puck cruised over the stick of Grumet-Morris and gave the Eagles a quick 1-0 advantage.
Harvard equalized the game at one at 10:33. On Harvard's first power play, Jon Pelle took the puck at the far post off of a rebound of a short side wrister from Andrew Lederman and beat BC goalie Matti Kaltiainen to the net.
The Crimson found the net on a power play five minutes later. Lederman took a pass at the point from Tom Walsh and put it top-shelf on Kaltiainen. It was Lederman's second point and it left the Eagles with a 2-1 deficit going into the first intermission.
For the third consecutive game, the Eagles have trailed after the first period of play.
BC put consistent pressure on the Crimson zone in the second. With just under five minutes remaining in the period, Spina was awarded a penalty shot as he was tripped on a breakaway. Spina took it up left side and Grumet-Morris came out to meet Spina.
The forward faked out and attempted to go far post to the right. As he put pressure on the stick to let off the wrister, the blade of the stick broke, the puck slid by the net slowly and the Eagles were left empty-handed.
None of BC's 10 second period shots on goal touched the net as the Eagles went back into the locker room down 2-1.
At 3:28 in the third, Harvard extended its lead to two. Another BC penalty gave the Crimson a power play and 15 seconds later, Harvard capitalized. Pelle took a rebound from a Brendan Bernakevich shot and went over the glove of the prone Kaltiainen.
Kaltiainen made 25 saves for BC and takes him second loss of the season. Grumet-Morris made 20 saves for the Crimson.
BC travels to Providence this Friday to take on the Friars at 7 p.m.
