Women's Ice Hockey Tops Vermont 3-1

The Boston College women's ice hockey team captured its first win of the season in Burlington, Vt. this afternoon. Three different players scored for the Eagles to lead them to a 3-1 victory over Vermont (2-1-6).
The Eagles came out shooting in the opening period. BC fired 15 shots on goal, but was unable to connect in the first. Krystal Strassman adjusted from defense to left wing and took three of her eight shots in the opening period.
BC received a power-play opportunity at 1:16 into the second stanza on a Vermont hooking penalty. The Eagles were able to capitalize on their third power-play chance of the game. Sarah Feldman passed to classmate Deborah Spillane who scored her second power-play goal in as many games.
The Eagles continued their power-play scoring five minutes later when Kerri Sanders beat the Catamount goalie at 6:59 for her first goal of the season. Heidi Seidewand earned her first assist of the season on the goal.
The scoring would not stop there for the Eagles. Sarah Courtney extended the BC lead at 10:09 on her first goal of the season. Michelle Lombardi delivered a great pass to Courtney to give the Eagles a 3-0 edge.
BC released 18 shots on goal in the second period and the Eagle's defense did not allow any shots. Freshmen linemates Erin Blood and Rachel Wedig played very strong from the blue line as they both took three shots in the game.
In the third period, the Catamounts got on the board at 7:10 on a power-play goal by Hilary Johnson. The Eagles continued to blast shots at Vermont as they added 18 more shots on goal in the third. BC out-shot UVM 51-14 on the day.
In goal, Alison Quandt stopped 13 shots to earn her first win of the season.
BC (1-5-0, 0-1-0) will host its second Hockey East game of the season on Friday night at 7 p.m. when the Connecticut Huskies come to Kelley Rink.
