
Volleyball Edges Rutgers 3-2

The Boston College volleyball team earned its tenth straight win tonight at home in its victory over BIG EAST opponent Rutgers (12-7). The Eagles topped the Scarlet Knights 3-2 (30-21, 27-30, 30-24, 25-30, 15-9) to bring them to 3-0 in BIG EAST conference action. Dorota Niemczewska led BC with 24 kills and four blocks.
In game one, the Eagles came out very strong on offense. The team converted 16 kills on 32 attempts for a remarkable attacking percentage of .406. Tied at 11, BC went on a four point unanswered run led by Kristin Kenney's impressive serving from the backcourt. The Eagles went up 14-11 and would never trail from there. Morgan Woodcock set the tone defensively with two of her three blocks coming in the first game. BC took game one 30-21.
Rutgers responded in game two by jumping out to an early 14-11 lead. The Eagles battled back to tie the game up at 15. Two straight kills by Katie Andersen gave BC a 17-15 edge. Andersen recorded nine kills and 12 digs on the night. Rutgers came back to tie the match and would never look back as the Scarlet Knights won game two 30-27.
The Eagles fell behind early in game three 12-9. However, Niemczewska charged the Eagle's offense with five kills in game three and helped tie the score at 19. The sophomore also controlled the defense with one block solo and two block assists in the game. The two teams were tied five more times in the match, until Kelsey Johnson put down one of her 18 kills on the night to give the Eagles a 26-23 advantage. The Eagles allowed only one more point and won the game 30-24.
In game four, the Scarlet Knights fought back. Rutgers had a quick 10-5 lead and would never relinquish its advantage. The Scarlet Knights topped the Eagles 30-25 in the fourth game.
Niemczewska continued to power the Eagles in game five. She slammed down six kills in the final game to help lead BC to a 15-9 victory. Kenney also helped control the offense with 11 of her 66 assists coming in game five.
Alison Shepp had another stellar performance for the Eagles. The sophomore registered 12 kills, two block solos, and three block assists in the match. Defensively, Allison Anderson continued to shine with 32 digs on the night.
BC (17-7) will continue its BIG EAST action on Sunday when the Eagles host Seton Hall at 1 p.m.
