The Boston College volleyball team topped Rutgers University (10-4) in its first match of the BIG EAST Challenge tonight. The Eagles beat the Scarlet Knights 3-1 to bring them to 10-7 on the season.
In their first look at BIG EAST competition the Eagles focused on playing point by point, which is exactly what they did. BC dropped the first game 30-26, but the Eagles would take control in the remainder of the match.
The Eagles regained their form in game two by jumping out to a quick 17-5 lead. Allison Anderson took control with her serve as she completed one service ace during the Eagles five point unanswered run. BC never looked back in game two as they pounded the Scarlet Knights 30-16.
In game three, setter Verena Rost dominated the Eagle offense. The junior registered 54 assists and added three block assists in the match. Tied at 10 in game three, the Eagles took off led by Katie Andersen's impressive play. Andersen recorded a kill from Rost to give the Eagles an 11-10 lead and they never trailed from there. The senior registered a match-high 25 kills on the night, while adding 10 digs. BC took game three 30-26 from Rutgers.
The two teams continued to battle in game four. In a very close game, the teams exchanged point for point as they were tied 11 times in the game. Tied at 20, freshman Kelsey Johnson recorded one of her 12 kills on the night to give the Eagles the lead. Johnson had a solid performance with only two errors and attacking percentage of .476. Key kills by Dorota Niemczewska and Abigail Hasebroock down the stretch helped seal the victory for the Eagles. Niemczewska had ten kills in the match, while Hasebroock added six. BC won game four 30-28 to take the match.
The Eagles dominated the attack by averaging a remarkable .362 attacking percentage in the match. BC committed only 18 attacking errors on the night. Sophomore Alison Shepp contributed to the attack with 11 kills on 28 attempts for a .321 percentage.
Although BC is facing BIG EAST members in the tournament, the results of these contests will not count toward the Eagles' BIG EAST regular-season record.
BC will look to win four in a row on Saturday against Connecticut (7-5) in the conclusion of the BIG EAST Challenge at 4 p.m.
