CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The women's ice hockey team (3-3-0, 0-1 Hockey East) dropped their first Hockey East game of the season, losing to the University of Maine 3-2 on Friday night.
In the first of the two games played on Kelley Rink between the two teams, Maine (2-4-2, 1-0 Hockey East) took control of the puck early, getting on the board first. The Black Bears netted one behind BC goalie Lisa Davis but the Eagles could not answer. Maine's Kate Sunstrum netted the goal while BC was shorthanded. Kristin Blundo was serving a penalty for checking at 14:30. Maine began sending players to the penalty box consistently in the first, but the Eagles could not capitalize on the power play.
BC put one on the board during the second period. Nancy Gillis attacked the net but couldn't get passed Maine goalie Lara Smart. Sarah Courtney was right behind her to score on the rebound. It was Courtney's first goal of the season and Gillis' first assist.
The Black Bears notched another goal just two minutes into the third period. A slap shot from the blue line by Sonia Corriveau was unassisted and put Maine up 3-1. With less than four minutes remaining, Sarah Courtney grabbed control of the puck and cut the lead, 3-2. But Courtney's goal wasn't enough to match the Black Bears.
Boston College will host Maine again on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Kelley Rink.
