CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College (1-1) women's ice hockey lost its first game of the season Thursday night to Vermont (1-5-1) 3-1.
The Eagles dominated a majority of the tilt, attempting 22 shots in the first period alone. Vermont's goalie Kami Cote had an outstanding night, saving 26 shots and allowing only one goal. BC's Lisa Davis saw the puck come her way and made 12 saves, but it wasn't enough to hold the lead.
A power play goal in the first period by Lindsay Bazzone (form Heidi Seidewand) put the Eagles up on the board first. The forward had a spot right in front of the net and banked one behind Cote. The Catamounts were on the attack, landing in the penalty box three times in just the first. High sticking, obstruction and tripping were the calls that kept BC to full strength for a majority of the game. Sarah Courtney and Seidewand each saw time in the box on calls for tripping.
For the second period BC came out and held on to the puck, staying inside the Vermont blueline for a significant amount of time. Neither team was able to score, alternating time in the penalty box for twp interference calls, a checking call and a holding call.
The game landed in the hands of Vermont during the third period. The Catamounts took possession early and held on to it for the last twenty minutes. UVM out-shot the Eagles 14-12. Abby Kaknes tied it up just a minute and half in the third, while Hillary Johnson's goal four minutes later but the Catamounts on top. The Eagles would try to get control but an empty net goal by Lindsey Tilbury with just over a minute left to play, sealed BC's fate.
The Eagles will return to action on Sunday, November 2, to host Union College at 4 p.m.
