Volleyball Falls To Notre Dame

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College Volleyball (15-6, 2-3 BIG EAST) fell to fifteenth-ranked Notre Dame (17-2, 7-0 BIG EAST) in three straight games Friday night. It was the Eagles third conference loss of the season.
Notre Dame came to Power Gym on a nine game winning streak. Boston College kept right on the entire match, but the Irish had the lead for the majority of the night. Freshman Dorota Niemczewska had five kills in the opening game to lead the Eagle squad. BC recorded 17 kills in game one, while ND only had 10. The Irish kept the Eagles attack to .086 and were able to mount an offense that scored off four blocks and an attack percentage of .156.
Boston College took the early lead in game two but was warded off as the Irish fought back and took control. Notre Dame kept the Eagles hitting .020 on 14 kills. Allison Anderson stepped up defensively with six digs, but it wasn?t enough to stop ND, attacking with 13 kills and hitting .278. Irish middle blocker Lauren Brewster combined with teammates for three block assists in the front of the net, and attacking with one block solo. Emily Loomis made five kills on BC and saved four attempts by the Eagles to score a point. Alison Shepp made five kills on the South Bend team and had one block solo. In the final points, Notre Dame made a run and took the game with BC behind at 21 points.
The Eagles again took the opening lead and had control of game three, but Notre Dame kept on and the score was tied for most of the time. BC defense was strongest in the final set, keeping the Irish hitting percentage to .067. ND came out hard on the net and worked for 10 block assists. Morgan Woodcock and Niemczewska made a block assist that surprised everyone and easily notched a point on the scoreboard. The Irish had four service errors to aid the Eagles fight to take game three, but closed out the match 30-23 on a BC error.
Boston College had a strong attack, scoring off 40 kills compared to the 33 by the Irish. BC combined for four team blocks and six block assists. Andrea Leonard?s squad kept the Irish attack overall to .165. Brewster, the third ranked player in the country for blocks, had four block solos and seven block assists against BC.
Boston College will return to Power Gym on Sunday, October 26, to host conference foe Syracuse at 1 p.m.
