ORONO, Maine -- The Boston College women's hockey team traveled to Alfond Arena on Saturday afternoon in search of its first Hockey East victory this season. The Eagles fell short, but still earned a point with the 3-3 tie to stay ahead of the Black Bears in the conference standings.
BC outshot the Black Bears 8-7 in the first period. Both teams had quality opportunities, but the goaltenders were solid. Maine's Lara Smart and BC's Alison Quandt each came up with tough stops to keep the game scoreless.
Boston College finally broke the scoreless tie at 18:28 of the first as Lindsey Bazzone beat Smart low on the stick side to put the Eages up 1-0. Maine struck back just 32 seconds later though, as Jarin Sjogren poked home a rebound off a Naomi Smethurst shot for her second goal of the season to even the score at one apiece going into the first intermission.
The second period saw more back and forth action, but not a lot of shots on goal, as both teams managed only four in the period. Maine struck first in the second frame as Cindy Biron picked up a rebound on the left side, circled the back of the net and beat Quandt low with a wraparound goal for her second of the season. Maine's lead would be short-lived, however, as BC's Jaclyn Kryzak evened the scored at two just under five minutes later. Kristin Blundo brought the puck down the right side and slid a pass across the front of the net to a streaking Kryzak, who one-timed it past Smart to even the game at 2-2.
In the third period, Maine took the lead as Karen Droog put home a rebound for her eighth goal of the season at 8:07 of the period. Once again, the lead was short-lived. Boston College evened the game at 14:16 as Alaina Clark picked up a loose puck in front of the goal and poked it home to extend her point-scoring streak to six consecutive games. Each team had some great chances late in the game to take the lead, but neither was able to capitalize, as regulation time ended in a 3-3 tie.
The overtime period was dominated by the Black Bears, as they swarmed the offensive zone. The Boston College defense held strong, as the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
Quandt finished with 17 saves on 20 shots to bring the Eagles to 7-7-3 (0-2-3 Hockey East), while Smart stopped 22 of 25.
The Black Bears and Eagles will meet in the rematch tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm.
