CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore forward Oktay Kilic (Univ. of Heidelberg/Heidelberg, Germany) tallied the game-winning goal for the second time in as many games as No. 21 Boston College beat No. 9 Boston University, 2-1, in a heated affair Wednesday afternoon at Newton Campus Soccer Field.
Eight minutes into the second half, sophomore midfielder Bill Arnault (Cicero-North Syracuse/Clay, N.Y.) lofted a corner kick in front of the net. Kilic rushed the box, elevated over the defense and headed in the game-winner at the 53:07 mark, lifting the Eagles to their fourth victory of the season against only one defeat. All five of the games in which they have been involved have been decided by one goal.
Head coach Ed Kelly decided to give senior midfielder Johnathan Munko (LaSalle Academy/Scituate, R.I.) his first start of the year, and the move paid off as Munko scored in the 32nd minute on a beautifully executed give-and-go with junior forward Neil Krause (Assumption College/Holliston, Mass.). For Krause, it was his team-leading sixth point of the season.
The home team looked like it was going to go into the locker room with a 1-0 lead, but Terrier midfielder Andrew Dorman blasted a direct kick into the upper right-hand corner of the net at 44:17 to knot the score.
Fifth-year keeper Kyle Singer (Univ. of Virginia/Plymouth, Minn.) made four saves, while his counterpart, Matt Smith, made seven. The two teams combined to take a whopping 35 shots.
Boston University (4-2-1) was unable to take advantage of its 10-6 advantage in the corner kick department.
The Eagles return to conference action Saturday, Sept. 28, when they travel to North Kehoe Field in Washington, D.C. to take on Georgetown (3-4-0, 2-1-0 BIG EAST) in a 1 p.m. tilt.
