Softball Pushes Past Cornell, 5-1

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Kim Ryan pitched two-hit ball through six innings and Jen Asbury went 2-for-3 with one RBI as Boston College defeated Cornell, 5-1, in softball action on Shea Field on Saturday. With the win, the Eagles moved to 24-26 on the season, while Cornell fell to 29-20 overall.
Cornell scored first, posting its lone run in the top of the second inning. Annette Sheppard singled up the middle and scored when Julie Staub doubled to deep left field.
BC responded with the equalizing run in the bottom of the third. Erin Mackey bruised a one-out triple to the right field corner, then came in on a Jackie Goodchild groundout.
Two innings later, the Eagles went ahead with a three-run frame. After Mackey flied out with a deep ball to straight-away center for the first out, Asbury stepped in with a single up the middle. Goodchild followed with a slap up the middle that found the seam between second and short, before Cara Blumfield ripped a shot through the left side. Lisa Field's single through the pulled-in left side plated Asbury and Goodchild. Lisa Fischer brought in Blumfield with a sac fly to deep center for the 4-1 lead.
In the sixth, Asbury's second hit of the day brought in Michelle Daly for the Eagles' final run. Daly dropped in a bloop single over the shortstop's head in her pinch-hit at-bat to open the inning.
Ryan went 6.0 innings and allowed one run on two hits. She struck out five and walked one. Brooke Shull completed the game, striking out one in 1.0 inning pitched. Cornell's Sarah Sterman went 5.0 innings for the Big Red, allowing four runs on eight hits. She struck out one and walked two. Nicole LePera tossed the final inning, allowing one run on two hits.
Boston College closes its regular season on Sunday, April 5 with a BIG EAST doubleheader against Pittsburgh. Game one goes off at 11 a.m. on Shea Field. The Eagles' three seniors - Leah Kamataris, Jennifer Lombardi and Brooke Shull - will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
