VILLANOVA, Pa. - Boston College split a pair of BIG EAST Conference games with Villanova, losing the first 9-1 (6 inn.) and winning the second 1-0 in nine innings. BC moved to 12-17 overall (2-2 BIG EAST), while Villanova moved to 20-6 overall (3-3 BIG EAST) with the split. Cara Blumfield went a combined 3-for-4 on the day.
In the first game, Villanova used a two-run first inning and a four-run second inning to go onto the win. Kristen Yauch and Robin Flier came across in the first inning to take the Wildcats to a 2-0 lead. Yauch reached after being hit by a pitch to lead off the game and came home on a sacrifice fly by Sara Carlson. Flier took her base on an infield single, then came home on a throwing error later in the inning.
In the second inning, the Wildcats batted around the order to score four runs. Flier singled in Allison Wisniewski, then Carlson beat out an infield hit to drive in Kristen Romano. Lisa Krueger's single to left field brought in Ricci Lugo and Flier.
Villanova closed the scoring with three runs in the sixth inning to run-rule the Eagles.
Boston College generated its lone run in the fifth inning. Erin Mackey was hit by a pitch to open the inning, then was replaced on the basepath by Sara Kellner. After advancing to third, Kellner came home on a Jacqui Goodchild double to right center field.
Theresa Hornick earned the win for Villanova, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing two hits and striking out five. Kristen Haynes closed out the game's final 1.2 innings, allowing three hits and striking out three. Kim Ryan went 5.2 innings for the Eagles, allowing 11 hits and eight earned runs, while striking out three batters.
Game two featured a pitchers' duel between the Eagles' Tekae Malandris and Hornick. Malandris faced the minimum through six innings. She did allow two hits - both by Lisa Krueger - but was helped out by the runner getting caught stealing after both hits. Blumfield belted the Eagles' lone hit to that point.
Through seven complete innings, neither team was able to generate a run. Both teams advanced runners to second in the eighth inning, but both pitchers prevented the runners from coming home. The Eagles broke though in the ninth inning when Lisa Fischer singled in Blumfield, who doubled to open the frame.
Malandris pitched her third complete game shutout in a row with 10 strikeouts in nine innings. Hornick sat down seven in 8.1 innings, and was relieved by Shannon Williams in the ninth.
Boston College will face Rutgers in a BIG EAST doubleheader on Sunday, March 7 beginning at noon in Piscataway, N.J.
