SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Boston College baseball team (15-12, 6-3 BIG EAST) and Seton Hall (14-14, 5-4) battled to a split decision on Saturday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Eagles took game one, which was a seven-inning contest, 7-5, but the Pirates rebounded with a 10-5 win in game two. With the win in game two, Seton Hall ended a four-game losing steak to the Eagles.
In the first game, freshman Chris Lambert (6-0) continued his incredible rookie campaign for Boston College as he pitched a complete game. While Lambert did give up five runs, all of which were earned, and seven hits, he did strike out a career high 12 batters.
Lambert almost missed out on his opportunity to pick up his sixth win, as the Eagles were trailing the Pirates, 4-2, heading into the fourth inning. However, Boston College rebounded in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings by posting five runs to take a 7-4 lead.
The Eagles were able to get their bats going once again, as they posted 12 hits in the first contest. Left fielder Neal McCarthy, right fielder Brian Macchi, first baseman Vinny Scavone and short stop Ryan Morgan each posted two hits apiece. Morgan, who is a freshman, had one of his best games as a member of the Eagles' squad. Morgan hit his first collegiate home run in the fourth inning.
Bryan Haggerty (1-1) picked up the loss for the Pirates, as he went four innings allowing seven hits, five runs (all earned) and struck out one BC batter. Second baseman Anthony Seratelli led Seton Hall, as he went 3-for-4 from the plate.
The luck against Seton Hall ran out in game two, as the Pirates pounded out 15 hits and lit up Boston College starting pitcher Mark Sullivan for nine runs.
Designated hitter Todd Crawford was the hero of the second contest for Seton Hall, as he went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Seratelli continued his hot afternoon for the Pirates, as he belted out two more hits to give him five in the two games.
Seton Hall jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning, however, Boston College bounced right back in its half of the second with four runs to knot the score at 4-4. Following scoreless third and fourth innings for both teams, the Pirates scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to grab a comfortable 9-4 advantage. Both teams would manage only one more run apiece for the rest of the game.
Sullivan (5-2) went six innings for head coach Pete Hughes. He scattered 12 hits, while giving up nine runs and two walks but struck out nine Seton Hall batters. Center fielder Drew Locke had a strong game from the plate, as he went 3-for-5 with one RBI. Designated hitter Brian Durkin and third baseman Jason Delaney both had two hits apiece.
Boston College and Seton Hall will conclude their three-game series at 12 p.m. Sunday at Owen T. Carroll Field.
