HANOVER, N.H. - The midweek woes continue for the Boston College baseball team (24-18) as it fell to Ivy League foe Dartmouth (17-18), 10-9, on Tuesday afternoon at Red Rolfe Field. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 1-2 against Ivy League opponents this season. BC fell to Brown earlier in the season, 4-1, but defeated Harvard convincingly, 13-4.
After falling behind 1-0 after the first inning, Boston College put six runs on the board over the four innings to take a comfortable 6-1 lead. Short stop Ryan Morgan knocked a double in the second, which allowed first baseman Vinny Scavone to score from first for BC's first run of the game. For Morgan, it was his 18th RBI of the season.
In the third inning, BIG EAST Player of the Week Brian Durkin hit his team-leading 10th home run of the season when he drilled a two-run shot. Durkin's home run scored right fielder Brian Macchi, who had recorded his 22nd double of the season earlier in the inning. The Eagles posted two more runs in the fourth. The first run came from Scavone, who scored when Dartmouth first baseman Mike Mileuanic committed an error. Second baseman Matthew Duffey scored the second run of the inning following left fielder Eric Wright hitting into a 6-3-6 double play.
The Eagles got their sixth run of the day in the fifth when Scavone laced a single, which allowed center fielder Drew Locke to score from third. With the lead in hand heading into Dartmouth's half of the fifth inning, the Big Green posted six runs off of just three hits to take a 7-6 lead. One thing Boston College has struggled with this season is errors, and in the fifth it recorded three errors. As a team, the Eagles have record 88 errors on the season. BC starting pitcher Joseph Martinez was pulled from the game following the fifth, but of the seven runs he gave up only one was earned. He also gave up six hits, four walks while striking out four Dartmouth batters.
Following another run by the Big Green in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles scored two runs in the seventh to tie the contest up. Following a single by catcher Jeff Mackor, Locke stepped up to the plate and drilled a two-run home run. For the freshman, it was his second career home run. He finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBI while also scoring two runs.
The Eagles regained the lead in the eighth when Macchi recorded a single, which allowed Duffey to score from third base. Duffey led off the inning with a single and eventually made it to third following two-consecutive groundouts.
In the eighth and ninth innings, Dartmouth tallied two runs off of Boston College relief pitcher Matt Elfeldt to take the lead - a lead it would relinquish. Elfeldt (0-3), who picked up the loss, finished the game going 3.1 innings allowing five hits, three runs (two earned), three walks while striking out two batters. Scavone had a solid day from the plate for BC, as he went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
The Boston College baseball team returns to action at 3 p.m. Thursday when it takes on cross-town rival Northeastern in Brookline, Mass. at Friedman Field. It was one week from today that the Huskies defeated the Eagles in the championship game of the Beanpot tournament, 7-3.
