CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team dropped a non-conference match-up to New England rival Brown University, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Shea Field. The game was called in the top of the eighth inning due to severe weather in the Boston area. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 14-11 on the season, while the Bears move to 8-14.
The Bears jumped on Boston College starting pitcher Matt O'Donnell (1-4) in their half of the second inning, as they posted four runs on the sophomore. Brown right fielder James Lowe got things going in a big way as he blasted a three-run home run to left field. Following the three-run shot by Lowe, second baseman Robert Deeb crushed a solo home run off of O'Donnell to give the Bears a 4-0 lead.
After giving up the four runs in the second inning, O'Donnell was taken out of the contest. He went two complete innings, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out two Brown batters.
The Eagles got on the board in the bottom half of the third when short stop Ryan Morgan hit a sacrifice to the Brown second baseman, which allowed Boston College second baseman Josh DiScipio to score from third.
Boston College threatened in its half of the fourth and sixth innings, but were not able to put any runs on the board. In the fourth, the Eagles had runners on first and second with one out, but a pop up to the short stop and a ground out to the pitcher ended their threat. In the sixth inning, third baseman Jason Delaney knocked a single to left field, but left fielder Brian Durkin was picked off at third base after being hung up between third and home.
After O'Donnell was taken out at the start of the third inning, freshmen Kevin Shepard, Jake Marsello and junior Matt Elfeldt all gave head coach Pete Hughes solid innings. The three combined to allow zero hits, three walks and strike out five Brown batters.
Brown pitcher Jamie Grillo (2-0) picked up the win in relief, as he pitched two innings allowing only two hits while striking out two BC batters.
Boston College is back in action this weekend when it plays three games against BIG EAST rival Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J. The Eagles and Pirates will be play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m., which will then be followed by a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
