CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College run-ruled its second team in two days on its way to a 9-0 victory in five innings against Harvard at Shea Field on Thursday. Kim Ryan pitched a complete-game one-hitter and faced two more than the minimum and Cara Blumfield went 3-for-3 including a three-run home run and four RBI.
BC jumped on the board in the first inning before posting five in the third and three in the fourth. Jen Asbury got the Eagles started with a one-out walk, then moved to second when Jacqui Goodchild was hit by a pitch. Blumfield loaded the bases with a single to center field for Lisa Fischer who brought in Asbury with a sac fly.
The Eagles added five more runs in the third by batting around the order. Erin Mackey led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to third on Goodchild's single up the middle. Blumfield went the opposite way with a single through the right side and brought in Mackey from third. Fischer stepped up and drove in two with a double to right center before the Crimson changed pitchers. Michelle Daly followed with a double to left center and plated Fischer before coming home on an Elyse Meredith single to left field.
Ryan gave up her lone hit in the fourth inning - to Lisa Watanabe - but BC responded with three more runs in the bottom of the frame. After Mackey led off with a double to the gap in left field, Asbury took first on a walk. Blumfield - who in 2001 set the school home run record and had been homerless since March 16 - hit a blast to left center that cleared the fence. It was her seventh homer of the season.
Ryan went 5.0 innings for her eight complete game and sixth shutout of the season. She gave up just one hit with four strikeouts and two walks. Ryan earned her ninth win of the season. Harvard used a trio of pitchers as Kara Brotemarkle started and lasted 2.0 innings. She surrendered one run on one hit, struck out two and walked one. Suzanne Guy entered in the third and went 0.1 inning with four runs on four hits and one strikeout. Lauren Tanner completed the game's final 1.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
With the win, Boston College edged above .500 for the first time this season and improved to 23-22 overall. The Crimson fell to 26-9 overall.
The Eagles will next play a weekend of crucial BIG EAST doubleheaders.
